Development and Evaluation of a New Earth Excavator.

Abstract

The report summarizes an effort to demonstrate the technical feasibility of a new earth excavator. The concept was born of a deliberate and systematic effort to reduce or eliminate the large forces required in the application of conventional excavation equipment. In this particular case it was desired to reduce the large net excavation force that is required by conventional scrapers, a force provided by massive tractive devices -- the scraper's own tractor and, usually, additional pusher units.
