Silicon Carbide Whisker-Metal Matrix Composites.

Abstract

Aluminum alloy composites reinforced with silicon carbide whiskers were prepared by liquid-phase hot pressing of aligned whisker-powder bodies. Biaxial (x-y) alignment was obtained by filtering a liquid slurry. Uniaxial alignment was obtained by performing the filtration in a magnetic field, extruding the whisker-powder mixture suspended in solid camphene, or extruding the hot-pressed composite near the matrix melting temperature.
