Fireball Entrainment Study

Abstract

An experimental program to study the process of entrainment and turbulent mixing in fireballs is described. The high pressure test facility and diagnostic equipment which were developed for this investigation and preliminary analyses which have been performed are discussed. Methods of acquiring density and velocity field data using holographic interferometry and particle tracking techniques, respectively, as well as the interpretation and reduction of these data are outlined. Preliminary experimental results obtained at tank pressures of four and eight atmospheres are presented.
