Abstract

A detailed environmental survey of a specified area in the Pacific Ocean, northeast of Hawaii, was conducted on the R/V KANA KEOKI in September and October of 1972. The primary objective of this survey was to locate a North-South track, for a future acoustic experiment, that can be accurately represented in existing acoustic propagation models. Additional objectives included the collection of detailed bathymetric surveys of two 20 by 30 mile areas, XBT data to define the sound speed structure in the upper 2500 feet of the water column, and deep ocean casts to the bottom to define the deep water sound velocity, temperature, and salinity structures.
