Difference-Pulse Code Modulation Analysis and Comparative Evaluation.

Abstract

Optimum (Minimum-MSE) quantizers for speech and TV are developed. Difference-PCM (DIFPCM) is presented as an efficient scheme for digital encoding of speech and TV. This DIFPCM is analyzed theoretically, tested with real speech and its performance is compared with that of PCM and DPCM with optimum and logarithmic quantizing characteristics. The performance criteria used in this study are S/N and Dynamic Range. The performance of DIFPCM is found to lie midway between that of PCM and DPCM. (Author)
