Numerically Generated Ray Patterns for Internal Waves in a Stratified Fluid of Variable Altitude or Depth,

Abstract

The report describes some numerical studies carried out to establish an understanding of the temporal propagation of internal waves in the atmosphere or an ocean of variable altitude or depth. The theory the authors are employing here was developed in a previous paper by Hector, Cohen and Bleistein. In that paper an asymptotic theory for the propagaiton of small perturbation internal waves was developed. The present report is concerned with applying this asymptotic theory to time dependent fluid flows associated with specific kinds of internal wave propagation. (Author)
