Synthesis of 5-Ethylpicoline Acid

Abstract

The authors describe the synthesis of 5-ethyl picolinic acid 5-ethyl- 2-methyl pyridine. As methods of oxidation, they chose the reaction of Vilgerodt, the conversion of 2-methyl-5-ethylpyridine by way of N-oxide into 2- oxymethyl-5-ethylpyridine with a subsequent gentle oxidation, a condensation of the a-methyl group with benzaldehyde and oxidation of the stilbazole, and direct oxidation of the methyl group by selenium dioxide.
