Intragroup Concordance and the Effectiveness of Majority Rule Decisions.

Abstract

The role of two factors, (a) the diversity of goal preference within a group and (b) the relative similarity between an individual's goal preferences and the priority of goals established majority rule by a group decision, as determinants of an individual's reactions to such decisions were examined. The results indicated that diversity of goal preferences within the group signficantly influenced individual's behavioral support of the group decisions, rated satisfaction with the decision, rated representativeness of the decision, the difficulty in reaching the decision, and ratings of how committed an individual thought he would be to the decision. Behavioral support and rated satisfaction with the group decision were further influenced by the relative similarity between individual and group goal orderings. (Author)
