Reactions of Aromatic Nitrocompounds. 1. Photochemistry

Abstract

The flash photolysis and continuous photolysis at 2537A (pi to pi* transitions) of aromatic nitrocompounds in solution were performed. Flash photolysis revealed intermediates for o-nitrotoluene and its nitor derivatives. The spectrum and mean lifetime of the intermediate for flash TNT were determined. The continuous photolysis experiments reveals that all the aromatic nitrocompounds have disappearance quantum yields of the order 10 to the -3 power. These low values for the quantum yields imply that the most important reaction occurring is the deactivation to the ground state of the original molecule. The presence or absence of oxygen does not appear to be of significance. Product analyses suggest that aromatic nitrosocompounds and nitrophenols are main products.
