Uptake of Fe59 and Cr51 by Dog Red Blood Cells of Different Age Groups.
Abstract
Using the four-phase centrifugation system, five fractions of blood are obtained. The results of in vivo and in vitro uptake of Fe59 show that, initially, this isotope is associated with the erythrocyte fraction of low density (young cells); with longer time interval after Fe59 injection or increased storage time, the radioactivity shifts to the fractions of cells with higher gravity. Plasma does not retain any significant amount of radioiron either in the in vivo or in vitro experiment. In contrast to Fe59 uptake, the in vitro studies with Cr51 show that this isotope is retained by the fraction of erythrocytes of higher density. (Author)
