Electrody amic Magneto Plasma Experiment(ELMAX) Low Frequency Instabilities.

Abstract

The low frequency plasma instabilities of the ARL ELMAX confinement system are analyzed to determine the influence of controllable parameters on their initial growth rates and to estimate the anomalous turbulent plasma losses. Linear and turbulent dispersion relations are derived along with expressions for individual species diffusion coefficients and the ambipolar plasma loss. Results demonstrate that the two stream instability can be avoided whereas the drift instability cannot be controlled by adjusting design parameters. Feedback stabilizing systems are required to function faster than the turbulent electrostatic field auto correlation time if large diffusion losses are to be avoided. (Author)
