A Survey of Elliptical Galaxies at 6 CM,

Abstract

The paper reports the results of a 6 cm radio continuum survey of 191 E and SO galaxies with known redshifts. Nineteen galaxies were detected. These were reobserved at higher resolution and could be divided into well separated classes of compact and extended sources. The extended emission was found only in giant E galaxies whereas the compact radio sources were also found in less luminous E galaxies. This may affect the use of radio galaxies as standard candles in cosmology. The presence of optical emission lines is well correlated with compact radio emission. The authors discuss the possibility that the SO galaxies detected are in fact misclassified E or D galaxies. (Author)
