Velocity Irregularities in the Near Field of High Aspect Ratio Turbulent Jets,

Abstract

An extensive investigation has been made to determine the cause of irregularities in the near field velocity profiles of turbulent jets issuing from rectangular openings of high aspect ratio. These irregularities are seen to persist for about two exit major diameters downstream. Various means of reducing the nonuniformities are documented, but it does not seem possible to produce completely smooth profiles from orifices or nozzles of this small scale (minor diameter = .060 inch) without manufacturing processes beyond normal tolerances.
