Properties of the Biconical Antenna.

Abstract

Expressions are found for the fields produced by transverse magnetic (TM) and transverse electric and magnetic (TEM) modes along a finitely conducting biconical antenna and along a biconical antenna having a lossy dielectric coating. It is shown that antenna losses produce an attenuation of the fields and, because there is a dispersion of the fields along the biconical antenna, that the attenuation is not generally characterized by simple exponentials. A solution is obtained for the fields of the TEM wave along a biconical antenna coated with a dielectric cone of significantly different permittivity from that of the surrounding media. It is shown that the principal effect of dielectric coating is to reduce the wavelength along the antenna. Energy transfer along the biconical antenna is investigated, and the behavior of the fields along the antenna is interpreted. (Author)
