Fluctuating Pipe Pressures Produced by Modulated Jet Flow.
Abstract
The precise way in which sound pressure fluctuations are produced by the interaction of a jet and resonator remains in dispute. The report suggests that two current theories for the sound production mechanism may be comprehended by a more general approach, based on conservation of linear momentum and conservation of mass. Equating force per unit area exerted by the jet on a control volume containing the mixing region to the difference in pressure along the pipe axis leads to an expression for acoustic particle velocity in the standing wave as a function of the jet driving flow spectrum.
