Evaluation Report on Project Autumn Leaves (Sealifts of Ordnance in LASH Lighters and MILVAN Containers),

Abstract

Autumn Leaves is a project code name assigned by the Naval Material Command for the evaluation of two simultaneous sealifts of naval ordnance from the East and West Coasts. Autumn Leaves East consisted of 160 twenty foot MILVAN's and 3500 M/T of break bulk ordnance shipped overseas in the first Military Sealift Command (MSC) converted self-sustaining partial containership. Autumn Leaves West consisted of 7 LASH Lighters and 36 MILVAN's shipped via commercial LASH (Lighter Aboard SHip) vessel. The report contains the results of this project designed to evaluate and compare simultaneous shipments by cargo containers, LASH lighters and break bulk. A detailed description of operations, as well as a complete cost analysis are included. (Author)
