Resonant Oscillations with Damping in Open Tubes.
Abstract
A gas in a tube, one end of which is open, is driven by the periodic motion of a piston operating at or near a resonant frequency. Damping is introduced into the system by radiation of energy through the open end. It is shown that the boundedness of the resonant motion depends on the third order elastic constant in the equation of state. The effect of damping on the motion is investigated, and the different signals which result for different ranges of damping and frequency are delineated. There is qualitative agreement with experiment. (Author)
