On the Chi-Square Approximation to the Distribution of Friedman's (Chi square) sub r Statistic.

Abstract

The investigation is concerned with the accuracy of the large-sample approximations to the distributions of Friedman's statistic for the analysis of variance, and Steel's statistics for comparing r treatments with a single control, in a complete two-way classification scheme. Bounds of the Berry-Esseen type are given for the rates of convergence of these distributions to their limiting normal-theory forms. These bounds in turn support further bounds on the actual type 1 error probabilities in terms of the nominal values. (Author)
