On the Computation of Edge Correction for the Locally-Incompressible Narrow-Groove Theory.

Abstract

The locally-incompressible, narrow-groove theory is deficient in that it fails to satisfy the exact boundary condition of the ambient edge, giving rise to a corresponding inaccuracy in predicted bearing performance which could become significant if the width-to-length ratio of reach groove-ridge pair is not sufficiently small. A computation of edge correction is formulated which makes use of the natural, skew coordinate system; a logarithmic transformation of the longitudinal coordinate mapped its infinite extent onto a finite domain to facilitate numerical computation. Conventional finite difference approximation was then imposed. (Author)
