Acoustic Emission from Polycrystalline Ceramics.
Abstract
The principal objective was to see if some characteristic feature in the frequency spectrum of an individual burst or in the amplitude distribution of a series of bursts could be found and related to the microstructure or type of the ceramic. Also, it was hoped that a relationship between the rate of emission generation could be correlated with the rate of fracture of individual grains during the advance of the crack front. This report describes the results obtained when slow crack growth was induced in samples of polycrystalline magnesia, alumina, Lucalox, and spinel, as well as when attempts were made to produce slow crack growth in silicon nitride.
