Materials Processing of Rare Earth Cobalt Permanent Magnets
Abstract
The objectives of the program are to investigate materials processing methods with the goal of achieving optimum properties of SmCo5 and other RECo5 compounds as permanent magnets. The primary problem is achieving high magnetic coercivity. Studies to gain further knowledge of the liquid-phase sintering process and magnetic evaluation of sintered alloys were carried. Oxidation invariably accompanies magnet powder processing. Because of the possible connection between oxidation and reduced magnetic coercivity a study of the oxidation kinetics of SmCo5 was begun, emphasizing low oxygen pressures during the initial stages of oxidation at low temperatures and the selective oxidation of samarium by a modified internal oxidation process.
