Gun-Driven Magnetic Flux Compression--Feasibility Study,

Abstract

A series of preliminary experiments has demonstrated the feasibility of using a gun-launched projectile to produce magnetic flux compression. The projectile impacts and collapses a coil of triangular cross section into which a 60-kG seed field has been injected by a capacitor bank discharge. The seed field is compressed by a factor greater than 8 to achieve a peak field of 520 kG in a coil volume of 1 to 2 cc. (Author)
