Nanosecond Flash Photolysis of Triphenylamine Solutions.

Abstract

Nanosecond flash photolysis of triphenylamine (TPA) has been studied in polar and nonpolar solvents. The data show the triplet-triplet absorption with a maximum at approximately 530 nm, the formation of the cation radical of TPA, with absorption maxima at 575 and 630 nm, and a third transient species with an absorption maximum at 475 nm. The interesting feature of the 475 nm species is that its rate of decay equals the rate of formation of the TPA radical cation in polar solvents, while in nonpolar solvents it decays to generate another transient with an absorption maximum at 630 nm but with spectrum profile and kinetic behavior different from those of the TPA radical cation. The assignment of the various transient species presented in the report was based on spectroscopic, kinetic, and energy transfer data. (Author)
