Spherical Hydrostatic Gas Bearing Gyro, Phase II.

Abstract

The report summarizes the effort within the Guidance and Control Directorate covering the design, development, and evaluation of a boundary layer pickoff, spherical diamond laps, V-groove rotor alignment, and gyro performance in a 5.3g root mean square random vibration environment. Evaluation results confirm a plus or minus 0.5 psid/deg linear pickoff scale factor with noise peak-to-peak amplitudes less than 0.15 degrees, rotor cavity reproduction of exact dimensions and low torque bearings at minimal fabrication cost, a spin axis repeatability of 0.6-mrad 1 sigma value using V-groove rotor alignment, and a stable bearing when exposed to a random vibration environment.
