Mathematical Analysis: Still-Water Gage.

Abstract

A mathematical analysis of the response of a still-water gage to wave action was performed. The mean water level in the gage was shown to coincide with the mean level of the impinging waves for symmetric wave shapes. For asymmetric wave shapes the mean level in the gage may not coincide with the mean level of the impinging waves. Deviations between the mean levels are shown to be a function of height, shape, period of the wave, and the dimensions of the gage. Figures are given which allow prediction of the order of magnitude of the error for asymmetric waves. These figures may also be used to choose gage dimensions which minimize the inherent error.
