Shock Propagation in a Decreasing-Density Spherically Symmetric Exponential Atmosphere,

Abstract

In a previous report the author reported the results of calculations of shock wave propagation in the downward direction (i.e., the direction of increasing density) from an explosion in a spherical exponential isothermal atmosphere. In this report, the corresponding problem is examined for upward shock propagation. A Lagrangian, finite-difference, artificial viscosity computer program (WUNDY) is used to generate the results. Modified Sachs scaling does not work well in the decreasing-density direction.
