The Synthesis of Carbohydrate Derivatives of Importance in Biosynthesis.

Abstract

The aim of the work was the chemical synthesis of aldohexosyl phosphate-4-ulose derivatives, including the biochemically important nucleoside 5'-pyrophosphate derivatives. In the hexose series a key compound, namely 2,3,6-tri-o-benzoyl-alpha-D-xylohexopyranosyl bromide 4-ilose diethyldithioacetal, was prepared from D-glucose in four steps. This bromide was converted into alpha-diphenylphosphate and beta-dipbenzyl phosphate. The phenyl groups in the former could not be removed by catalytic hydrogenolysis, and a pilot experiment has indicated that the benzyl groups in the latter could be removed by hydrogenolysis.
