Application of Petrofabric Analysis to Rock Mechanics Illustrated by a Study into an Anomalous Strength Anisotrophy in a Schistose Gneiss.
Abstract
The nature of petrofabric analysis is briefly discussed and one actual study is described in detail. Several petrofabric methods show promise in rock mechanics applications, such as in determining residual strain, principal stress directions, potential surfaces of failure in intact rock, and macrofracture patterns where they are not directly observable. In particular, petrofabric analysis is well suited for the investigation of deep-lying rock masses, several thousand feet below the surface, where state of strain and macrofracture data cannot be determined from exposed material. The petrofabric study described here was undertaken to evaluate possible causes of an apparent strength anomaly found by an earlier study in a schistose gneiss. (Author)
