Excavation Seismology

Abstract

The objectives of this program are to verify and evaluate two promising seismic array techniques for use in underground hard-rock excavations. The two array techniques to be evaluated are: A three-dimensional method of displaying the output signals from a two-dimensional array of transmitting sources and receivers to enable an operator to visually detect reflections from discontinuities within the probed rock volume; and A beamforming method developed in a previous study which employs sophisticated array signal processing to enhance reflections returned from specific directions.
