Investigation of Zero-Field (Parametric) Resonance Magnetometer using Optically Pumped Helium.

Abstract

The report describes the investigation of zero-field level crossing and the use of resulting resonances for measuring weak magnetic fields. This work includes investigation of zero-field level crossing in the 2 triplet S(1) level of helium 4 investigation of modulated zero-field resonances in the same level, and finally establishes the feasibility of constructing a low-field magnetometer using the parametric resonance n = 0, p = 1. A device of this type was demonstrated to have a peak-to-peak noise level of 1.0 x 10 to the minus 8th power G in a 0.5-Hz noise bandwidth. (Author)
