Suggestion for an Improvement of the 1967 Geodetic Reference System (Vorschlag zu einer Verbesserung des Geodaetischen Referenzsystems 1967),

Abstract

The 1967 Geodetic Reference System as adopted does not offer the possibility of unambiguously deriving either the earth's flattening or the formula for the normal gravity. In actuality, these data are missing: the earth's angular velocity (it is slowly decreasing), the ratio of the mass of the atmosphere to the mass of th earth, and also the coefficients J4, J6 of the higher harmonics in the potential of the earth's exterior gravitational field. Suggestions for improving this system are discussed.
