Evaluation of Stabilized Percursors for High-Strength Carbon Fibers,

Abstract

The method of direct graphitization is investigated. Samples of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fibers were stabilized at various combinations of temperature, tension, and duration of oxidation. The percent weight loss and chemical composition of each residue were then determined. It was found that chemical analysis and weight loss data of the fiber residue can be used to determine the extent of the stabilization of PAN fibers. (Author, modified-PL)
