Trans-cage NMR Coupling, and Cage-orbital Hybridization, in the Closo-carborane C2B3H5.

Abstract

Trans-cage H(1)-H(5) and H(1)-13C(5) coupling constants for the closo-carborane C2B3H5 are significantly greater than H(1)-H(2), H(1)-11B(2), and H(2)-13C(1) spin interactions. An estimate of orbital hybridization from 11B-13C, H-13C, and H-11B coupling data indicates that most of the cage-orbital s-character is to be found in the C-B bonds and very little in the B-B bonds.
