Multiple Doped Erbium Laser Materials

Abstract

d erbium doped materials. One phase of the program is to optimize the laser rod configuration. The effect on laser threshold and efficiency of laser rod length, diameter, and total Er(3+)-ion content is reported. Consideration was given to the Double-U laser rod which should provide more efficient coupling; results are discussed. The second phase of the program is to develop high purity phosphate core and cladding glasses which combine the higher oscillator strength of the phosphate glasses with the improved sensitization technique possible with the clad laser rod configuration. Efforts toward obtaining these high purity phosphate glasses, fabrication problems of clad rods of phosphate glass, sensitization of the cladding and determination of core and cladding compatibility are discussed.
