SKYLAB: Sensors and Remote Sensing in Support of the EREP Oceanographic Program.

Abstract

The acquisition of numerous types of oceanographic data over broad areas of the globe from the orbiting of SKYLAB in mid-1973 heralds a new dimension in oceanography. Remote sensors aboard SKYLAB will be able to observe ocean-surface phenomena over spatial areas heretofore unobtainable by present techniques. This report describes the applications to oceanography of the various sensor systems aboard SKYLAB contained in the Earth Resources Experiment Package (EREP). Data from the EREP sensor systems will encompass a broad range of the electromagnetic spectrum. As a consequence, validation of the EREP data will require obtaining correlative data using airborne remote-sensing techniques. For this purpose a C-130 aircraft belonging to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, equipped with a multitude of environmental sensor systems, will be the primary platform used. The types of surface truth necessary to support the EREP program, as well as a flight program for the C-130, will also be discussed. (Author)
