The Synthesis of Metallocarboranes by Polyhedral Expansion.

Abstract

The reduction of the closo-carboranes 1,7-C2B6H8, 4,5-C2B7H9, 1,6-C2B8H10, 1,10-C2B8H10, and 2,3-C2B9H11 with Na followed by complexation with CoCl2 and NaC5H5 produces metalloboranes of the following types: C5H5CoC2B(n)H(n+2), (C5H5Co2C2B(N)H(n+2), and C5H5CoC2B(n)H(n+1) (C2B(N)H(N+D). Similarly, addition of FeCl2 and NaC5H5 to the anions derived from the reduction of 1,7-C2B6H8 and 1,6-C2B8H10 results in new ferracarboranes. The preparation, characterization, and proposed structures of these metalloboranes are discussed. (Author)
