Memory System of a Problem Solver Generator,

Abstract

The paper is concerned with computer semantic memory, i.e. with the problem of representing general knowledge about a given world. The semantic memory issue is raised in the context of the problem of machine learning of heuristics and the connection with the problem of machine representation of knowledge is emphasized. A brief overview is made of what is known about the mecahnisms responsible for the observed human memory behavior. The guidelines for the implementation of a semantic memory are presented. The problem of knowledge representation is tackled in its general form, so that the proposed semantic memory may be of interest also in other fields, like natural language understanding, question answering, theorem proving.
