Exploratory Development for Studies of the Vaporization Kinetics and Thermodynamics of Graphite Using the High Pressure Mass Spectrometer.
Abstract
Diagnostic tests of the time response and ion-transmission behavior of the Nuclide double aperture ion source have continued, in an attempt to understand the origin of the double-humped neutral time-or-arrival (TOA) curves observed with carbon vapor and several gases. The object was to aid in the understanding of graphite ablation. Two schemes for operating the ion source in a pulsed mode are presented. Both involve pulsing on the electron beam for a period of 20 microseconds, either by pulsing the filament voltage or by pulsing the ion source housing voltage (J(1)). The pulsed ion source results, which are believed to be independent of ion-trapping effects, generally confirm the normal TOA behavior described in earlier reports.
