Identification of Marijuana and Hashish Smokers

Abstract

The report details work conducted on a project designed to evaluate a rapid presumptive field test for detection of hashish and hashish smokers. A kit consisting of lip swabs for smokers and a paper strip test for the hashish was devised and evaluated. Twenty kits, each capable of 20 smoker tests and 20 plant-material tests were assembled and dispatched to the Land Warfare Laboratory. The lip swabs were capable of detecting over 70% of persons smoking a normal amount of marijuana or hashish. The paper strip test is very sensitive and suffers only a few interferences. The paper strips are light-sensitive, however, and should be kept in the dark.
