Engineering Evaluation of Barkhausen Effect Stress Measurement Instrumentation for Application to Autofrettaged Gun Tubes
Abstract
A limited preliminary evaluation was made of the potential of the ferromagnetic Barkhausen effect stress measuring instrumentation for monitoring residual stresses induced in gun tubes by autofrettaging. Experiments conducted on small scale tubes verified that the instrumentation is proportionately sensitive to stress induced by autofrettaging. Measurements made on a full scale 175 mm gun tube before and after autofrettaging gave unexpected anomalous results. Further investigation will be required to determine the cause of this result. Measurements made on finished 175 mm and 8-inch gun tubes indicated that the instrumentation is capable of distinguishing between tubes which have been autofrettaged and comparable tubes which have not.
