Investigation of Turbulence: Equations for Compressible Gas, Space-Time Correlations in a Boundary Layer.

Abstract

Statistical equations for a turbulent compressible gas are given: (a) in a generalized form, the complete definitions of the non-random parts of the turbulent quantities being kept free for a later stage; (b) in the conventional form, the non-random parts being defined by the mean values of the turbulent quantities; and (c) in a form which is much simpler for mathematical treatment and physical meaning, where the non-random parts of the extensive turbulent quantities are defined by the mean mass-weighted values. Space-time correlations in a subsonic turbulent boundary layer without and with heat transfer have been measured. Triple correlations of velocities are especially significant of the structure of large scale fluctuations. (Author)
