Surface Wave Parametric Processors and Long Delay Lines.

Abstract

TRIC AMPLIFIERS, THIN FILM STORAGE DEVICES, MANUFACTURING, CRYSTAL GROWTH, BISMUTH COMPOUNDS, GERMANIUM COMPOUNDS, LITHIUM COMPOUNDS, OXIDES, NIOBATES, PIEZOELECTRIC CRYSTALSLITHIUM NIOBATES, *ACOUSTIC WAVES, *SURFACE WAVES, ACOUSTIC DELAY LINES, SIGNAL PROCESSING, SURFACE WAVESThe program is concerned with research on devices for achieving long time delays and devices for parametric signal processing, both using surface acoustic waves. A two-port helical delay line is described which produces 180 microsec delay with low cross-talk, on a bismuth germanium oxide crystal plate having face dimensions of approximately 1 inch by 2 inches. A design for a 1/2 millesecond delay line of this type on a larger crystal plate is presented. Work is described on helical waveguides for surface acoustic waves whose objective is to produce multi-millisecond time delays with low cross-talk. An electric field-shorting type of waveguide, using a thin deposited silver film in a closed loop on the surface of a bismuth germanium oxide wrap-around delay line, has demonstrated low propagation loss of .065 dB per microsec at 50 MHz.
