Virial Expansion for Physical Adsorption with Application to the System of Argon Adsorbed on Xenon-Plated Graphite.

Abstract

Systematic virial series in powers of the number of adsorbed atoms per unit area for both bulk pressure and heat of adsorption are developed. The formulation is applied to calculate the first two coefficients of both pressure and heat of adsorption for the system of argon adsorbed on xenon-plated graphite. It is found that the calculated single particle quantities agree reasonably with the experiment while the evaluated two particle quantities disagree with the experiment by 100% and 200%. The reason for these large discrepancies between theory and experiment is not clear. (Author)
