Investigation of Plane Strain Shear Testing. Report 3. Plane Strain and Triaxial Compression Tests on Painted Rock Dam Material.

Abstract

The investigation had two main objectives. The first objective was to study the effect of strain condition (i.e., axially symmetric and plane strain conditions), density, stress level, method of consolidation, and drainage conditions during shear on the deformation characteristics of a sandy gravel material from Painted Rock Dam. The second purpose was to compare the strength and deformation of two cohesionless materials, mostly subrounded Painted Rock material and highly angular crushed Napa basalt, when subjected to similar testing conditions.
