Investigation of Cement-Replacement Materials. Report 14. Use of Large Amounts of Pozzolans in Lean Mass Concrete (Second Phase),

Abstract

As a second phase of the study of lean mass concrete mixtures with large amounts of pozzolan, three studies were made. The concrete was investigated to determine if mixtures containing 94 lb of portland cement per cu yd would meet the requirements for mass concrete for use in the interior of gravity dams. Fourteen temperature-rise tests were made under adiabatic conditions using ten concrete mixtures, with and without various quantities of one of four pozzolans. These tests were made to determine the effects of the different quantities of pozzolans and the effects of mixtures without pozzolans on the temperature rise of the concrete. Specimens made from 36 of the mixtures were retested for permeability. (Author)
