Analysis of Field Compaction Data. Report 2: Littleville Dam, Westfield River, Massachusetts,

Abstract

The report is a review of the materials, specifications, procedures, equipment, and testing pertinent to construction and compaction control of the earth-fill embankment of Littleville Dam, Westfield River, Mass., constructed by the U. S. Army Engineer Division, New England. This report includes summation and analyses of the compaction control data submitted by the division to the U. S. Army Engineer Waterways Experimental Station. Statistical analyses are presented on the variation of fill water content from laboratory optimum water content and the variation of fill dry density from laboratory maximum dry density, based on results of field density sampling in each major zone of the embankment. The overall compaction control achieved for each major embankment zone is indicated by frequency histograms, cumulative frequency distributions, and various statistical parameters for variation of both water content and density.
