Studies on Al Base Rare Earth Alloys with Potential for Outstanding Permanent Magnet Properties.

Abstract

Data pertaining to structures, phase relations, and magnetic properties over a wide region in temperature are presented for Al substituted rare earth (R) transition metal (T) alloys of composition R2T17, RT5 and RT2. The mode of this substitution is investigated by x-ray diffraction. Large increases of coercive force are observed on Al substitution, particularly at low temperatures. The temperature dependence of coercive force is investigated. Changes in direction of easy magnetization are described as a function of concentration and temperature in Al substituted PrCo5. The mechanism of magnetization in narrow domain wall rare earth Laves phases is investigated. (Author)
