Proposed Relocation of North Entrance Channel, Buffalo Harbor, Buffalo, New York; Hydraulic Model Investigation.

Abstract

The proposed relocation of the north entrance channel to Buffalo Harbor about 2000 ft south of its existing position would necessitate removal of an 800-ft section of the existing Old Breakwater. Since existing wave-action condtions in Buffalo Harbor are considered satisfactory, a 1:125 scale, fixed-bed harbor model was used to determine the proper position and minimum length of a detached breakwater lakeward of Old Breakwater that will limit wave action in the harbor with the new entrance to that which obtains at present. A design wave height of 14 ft is recommended to insure the stability of the proposed breakwater during storm-wave action. (Author)
