Hard Rock Silo Prototype Test Side Selection Investigations.

Abstract

Geologic field reconnaissance and geophysical evaluation of eight areas in the western part of the United States were made to locate a site for conducting tests of a prototype hard rock silo (HRS). Where test beds within a site appeared promising, seismic surveys were made to determine compression wave velocities of the rock. Where seismic surveys indicated competent rock at reasonable depths, one or more core borings were made to determine the depth of groundwater and actual depth of competent rock. Field examination and laboratory tests of the cored rock were made to determine the amount of weathering, rock quality, degree of jointing, compressive strength, and hardness characteristics. Three possible granitic rock sites in the Laramie Range area were considered the most acceptable despite the problems of inadequate or marginal buffer zones and heavy snowfall in the late fall and winter months.
