Test of Updating Methodologies for Insurance Items.

Abstract

A 1971 test of procedures for managing insurance items showed that substantial benefits could be obtained by adopting either of two new methodologies which differ in updating demand forecasts. Another year of data was obtained and the test was redone. Results show, for the type of items considered, how the management decision parameters may be forecasted based on a heuristically developed procedure rather than a procedure which assumes that demand is simple Poisson. The results indicate that yearly forecasting is as good as more frequent forecasting.
